Large Orchestras & Ensembles Syllabus
Entries open 01/01/2023 and close 20/02/2023 CLOSED
Live performances: Tuesday 2 May
Deadline for video entries: Tuesday 28 March
Adjudicator: Caroline Harrison
Caroline studied viola at the Royal Academy of Music with Stephen Shingles. On leaving the Academy she was offered the position of Associate Principal viola with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and two years later accepted the position of Co-Principal viola at the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for thirty-one years.
During this time, Caroline frequently adjudicated on BBC Young Musician of the Year and also taught on the Orchestral Course at the Royal College of Music, as well as sitting as a guest adjudicator on the audition and exam panels. She also found time to play as Principal viola with the Orquesta de Cadaqués in Spain, with whom she recorded Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola with violinist Ludwig Müller, conducted by Sir Neville Marriner.
Since leaving the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2021, Caroline has enjoyed a varied musical life, working frequently with Glyndebourne Touring Opera and Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Guest Principal viola with various UK Orchestras, teaching at the Royal College of Music and giving live Zoom recitals to retirement villages and the Joy Club.
A new opportunity for 2023!
This section is open to school orchestras, bands and other instrumental ensembles, and also youth orchestras and similar. There are two ways for the groups to perform: online, either with a recording made especially for the festival or a video of a concert, or in-person, in which case we shall send you a visiting adjudicator (available for a limited number of local schools / groups – please check with section secretary). One or two local groups may be invited to perform in our Festival Concert on 23 May. Up to three teachers or other adults may be involved in the group, including a conductor. For online entries, details of how to upload your video will be sent when we have received your entry.
Enquiries about entering the Large Orchestra / Ensembles section should be emailed to: chair.rrmdf@gmail.com.
